Some rogue landlords are taking advantage of tenants by offering accommodation in return for sex and other services, according to a shocking new study by the BBC.
The rogue landlords are targeting young, vulnerable people for sex by posting online classified advertisements, offering accommodation.
The deals, which are completely legal, are appearing on classified advertising websites, such as Craigslist. The arrangements have been described by charities as “exploitative”.
Craigslist, which carries around 100 such adverts per day, has not commented on the worrying findings.
The BBC investigation found that one advert posted by a landlord in Maidstone asked for a woman to move in and pretend to be his girlfriend. Another publicised a room in London for a “naughty girl”, while one in Brighton targeted younger men.
The rogue landlords that post these adverts are often very clear on how the arrangements would work.
One told the BBC: “I was thinking once a week, something like that, I’m happy as long as there’s sex involved.”
Another explained: “You agree sort of like a couple of times a week, pop into my room sort of thing, but as far as the apartment’s concerned, it’s like completely as if we’re flatmates. It’s all the bills, the rent, free.”
Are you aware of such practices in the private rental sector?
We urge all landlords to treat their tenants fairly and look out for their health and safety.
This extends to accepting certain services in lieu of rent. If your tenants cannot pay their rent for your property, you must have a procedure in place to chase the money and potentially evict the tenants.
The easiest way to ensure you still get paid throughout this process is with Rent Guarantee Insurance. This peace of mind insurance covers your rental income if your tenant cannot pay. Our policy is also combined with Legal Expenses Cover, which will pay any legal expenses you incur.
